Moisture mapping is an organized record of where moisture is detected across affected and nearby materials. It helps connect the visible loss with flooring transitions, wall bases, cabinets, ceilings, lower levels, and adjoining spaces.
Map the event
A water loss is a route, not a single stain.
Start with the known or suspected source. Then record the direction water traveled, the rooms and levels it crossed, and the materials encountered along the way. Doorways, seams, wall openings, floor transitions, gravity, and porous materials can connect spaces that look separate.
What belongs on the map
- Visible standing water, staining, swelling, cupping, softened material, or changed finishes.
- Flooring layers, subfloor, baseboards, drywall, insulation, cabinets, ceilings, and built-ins.
- Nearby rooms, closets, hallways, lower levels, and the opposite side of a shared wall.
- Contents such as furniture, rugs, documents, electronics, and stored items that affect access.
Do not enter standing water near electricity, approach a sagging ceiling, or open an unsafe assembly to complete a map. Document from safe locations.
Why mapping supports drying
